First 5 Fresno County

As a prevention-based organization, our investments are guided by an approach similar to the Spectrum of Prevention which recognizes there is a range of approaches that must be taken in order to achieve sustainable changes.

First 5 Fresno County funding is invested in the community across the following four areas:

In order to promote an optimal environment for children, the Commission advocates for policies that will promote children's optimal health and development.

Working with others to create and nurture a community that is supportive of the health and development of young children is a top priority to First 5 Fresno County. This critical work aims to make lasting community change by working with policy makers and other community members who are able to influence and make policy decisions that affect young children and their families. In particular, the Commission aims to support families by influencing policy and improving practices in the areas of: breastfeeding support, environmental quality, healthcare access and services, and early care and education opportunities.

The Commission invests in building the organizational capacity of our community partners through a comprehensive approach that includes a variety of evidence-based trainings and technical assistance as well as the centerpiece program - the Sustainability Project. Strong parents raise strong children. Therefore, the Commission is committed to building the capacity of parents and caregivers so they can advocate for the needs of their children. This work is done through a network of community partners under the Family Strengthening Advocacy and Leadership Initiative.

The Commission utilizes multiple mediums to educate the community on a variety of topics related to children ages 0 to 5. This includes our public service announcement campaigns and partnerships with local media outlets.
